Licensing and Regulations

North Dakota requires apprentices to be at least 18 years old and register within 30 days of beginning employment (hours worked after 30 days without registration don't count toward requirements and violate state law). Journeyman candidates need at least 7,600 hours (four years) as an apprentice under master supervision plus passing the examination. Master plumbers require 3,400 additional hours (two years) as a journeyman plus examination, and must also hold a General Contractor's License from the state. Master plumbers must complete four credit hours of continuing education within two years via board-approved courses. The board maintains reciprocity with Minnesota, Montana, South Dakota, and Wyoming. Journeyman licenses renew annually by December 31st.
