Journeyman candidates must complete apprenticeships, meet training hours, and pass both written and practical exams (50 multiple-choice questions covering BOCA International Plumbing Code and State Building Code SBC-3). New journeyman applications cost $75 with $72 biennial renewals. Master plumbers need five years proven experience and at least one year holding journeyman licenses, passing master exams and meeting insurance requirements. Master applications cost $75 with $240 biennial renewals. Both levels require seven hours of continuing education per two-year cycle. Rhode Island may issue licenses to out-of-state plumbers if requirements mirror Rhode Island's.
